GMC started in the early 1900s when Maurice and Max Grabowsky started to work on a single-cylinder engine. They were building a robust truck that would go on to become the foundation of their brand. At the time, their company went by the name, “Rapid Motor Vehicle Company” and earned praise for its efforts. Another company named Reliance Motor Car Company joined up with GM before both were merged together in 1911. This is when the name, “GMC” came out and become popularized.

Once the division had been created, it was already home to 20,000 vehicles and had started to earn appreciation for its designs. By 1916, GMC started to deliver newer trucks that were seen being used in cross-country races. These vehicles would travel from Seattle to New York in a bid to illustrate what they were capable of offering. These GMC trucks set the record for distance covered by traveling between New York and San Francisco in less than six days.

GMC was getting orders from various institutions and businesses including the army as it hoped to use the new T-series vehicles for ongoing missions. The company was also asked to produce larger trucks to haul circus animals such as the elephant. Their trucks were deemed to be of superior quality to anything else on the market and this led to their rise in popularity in 1929.

GMC greatest decision would be its move into a new segment of automotive vehicles. The pickup truck was starting to gain in popularity and was listed as one of the best options on the market at the time. GMC and its management noted this reality and started to work on designing a cult classic. By the time of their release “T-14,” the pickup truck gained steam and was adored by car enthusiasts.
